Marielle McNeal's Experience:
-
Head Instruction Librarian at North Park University
January 2014 - Present | Chicago, IL -
Reference and Instruction Librarian at City Colleges of Chicago
January 2011 - January 2014 | Chicago, ILAs a community college librarian, I experienced a lot of variety in my work life. Reference and instruction were my core duties, but I wore many "hats" daily. The community college environment is entirely focused on students and student learning; it was rewarding to know that my job directly impacted student success and retention. As a Reference and Instruction Librarian, I taught research and information literacy skills to enrich and support the academic curriculum. I also served as the liaison and embedded librarian to several academic departments. Outreach was a major component of my position. I enjoyed interacting with students and finding new ways to make the library relevant to the student population. My other responsibilities included: collection development, interlibrary loan, circulation, and library tech support.
-
Graduate Assistant, Reference, Research and Scholarly Services at University of Illinois at Urbana - Main Library
August 2007 - August 2009 | Urbana, ILMy graduate assistantship at UIUC allowed me to gain real world experience as an academic librarian. My two-year appointment greatly enhanced my LIS education. As a Graduate Assistant, I taught workshops as part of library's Savvy Researcher instruction program. I also taught orientation and instruction sessions for graduate students enrolled in English as a second language writing courses. As a member of the reference desk team, I responded to a high-volume of reference questions in-person, via email, IM/Chat, and phone. Through formal (classroom) and informal (reference desk) instruction, I helped to facilitate patrons' understanding of a large, complex and distributed library system.
-
Publishing Intern at Ivan R. Dee Publisher
May 2005 - August 2005 | Chicago, ILMy internship at Ivan R. Dee Publisher allowed me to gain experience in all phases of the publishing process, administrative and otherwise, from initial review through publication. I particularly enjoyed reading and reviewing manuscript proposals and having a part in deciding what new books/projects should be selected for publication. At the end of my internship, I completed a portfolio for college credit toward my Professional Writing minor. (Ivan R. Dee Publisher is now an imprint of Rowman & Littlefield, located in Lanham, MD)
-
Undergraduate Assistant, Reference and Information Services at Eastern Illinois University - Booth Library
August 2003 - May 2004 | Charleston, ILBooth Library is where I initially caught the "librarian bug" and fell in love with academic libraries. As an Undergraduate Reference Assistant, I answered ready-reference, directional, and library policy related questions. I also helped to maintain the reference department by filing and shelving books, microfiche, and government documents. I worked directly under several seasoned librarians and learned how assist patrons with use of select print and electronic resources.
